Member Exhibition at Stamford Loft Artists Gallery In Collaboration with the Stamford Museum & Nature Center
April 9 to May 1
Opening Reception Friday, April 8, 6 to 8pm Features Original Sargent Portrait Confiscated by the Nazis
Inspired by a famous John Singer Sargent “grand manner” portrait from the Stamford Museum & Nature Center’s permanent collection, Loft Artists Association members will showcase an exhibition of figurative and portrait work on view in the East Gallery at 575 Pacific Street from April 9 to May 1.
The portrait of Amsterdam financier J. P. Wolff, circa 1891-1895, has a spellbinding background, from its ownership by a prominent Dutch art dealer, to its confiscation by the Nazi military, and its ultimate gift to the Museum in 1955. The painting will be on view and Curator Kirsten Brophy will tell the full story at the opening reception April 8.
This show marks the second collaborative event between LAA and SM&NC, free to the public. “Discovering John Singer Sargent” is open Saturdays and Sundays from 1 to 4:30 pm. Admission and parking are free. Handicapped access is available. For directions and more information visitwww.loftartists.com or call 203-247-2027.
Now in its 38th year, the Loft Artists Association is a non-profit organization dedicated to building connections within Fairfield County’s visual arts community and introducing the general public to artists and their work. Their grassroots events attract thousands of visitors throughout the tri-state area and have been recognized by funding agencies, including the Connecticut Commission on the Arts, corporate and private sponsors, the City of Stamford and by visitors who return year after year.
